TikTok has commenced the rollout of its Instagram competitor, TikTok Notes, targeting specific Android and iOS users "for download and limited testing in Australia and Canada." The launch announcement via Twitter, alongside listings on the App Store and Google Play, revealed official app visuals, shedding light on its functionalities for those currently without access.
The showcased images unveil the ability to add headlines above captions for images, a feature not native to Instagram. Moreover, the app's homepage appears to be divided into two sections: one for viewing posts from followed accounts and another labeled "For You." This layout resembles Pinterest's homepage, albeit with a smaller, two-column grid. While it remains unclear whose posts are spotlighted on the "For You" page, it's plausible that they align with the preferences of the user, akin to TikTok's algorithm.
Despite these minor adjustments, TikTok Notes bears a striking resemblance to Instagram, marking a departure from the norm. Historically, Meta (formerly Facebook) has emulated features from other social media platforms, such as TikTok's Reels and Snapchat's Stories. However, with TikTok Notes, TikTok appears to be returning the favor.
Earlier this month, TikTok announced the new photo-sharing app via a notification to users, albeit with limited details beyond its name. It hinted at populating TikTok Notes with existing and future public TikTok photo posts by default, unless users choose to opt out.
The timeline for TikTok Notes' rollout in the US and other regions remains uncertain.
